Born in 1981 in Friedrichroda, East Germany, now based in Edmonton, Canada (since 2008),
Karl Michael Toepfer has been active in the field of noise, sound art and live performance since around 2007 under a variety of monikers and under his given name.

His work is inspired by the logicality and illogicality of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication, sensory perception processes and the predictability and unpredictability of information systems in the broadest sense.

Content is created in a variety of different ways: by misappropriating tools, devices and circuits in order to initiate feedback systems or by misusing non-sound producing circuits as sound- or sound-control sources, by capturing sound events through field recording and by re-contextualizing pre-recorded sounds into abstract, concrete collages and auditory events.

Toepfer's recorded material has been released on a number of labels in Canada, the United States and Europe. He has performed live in Western Canada and the United States.

In recent years, Toepfer has also worked in the areas of visual art – inspired by Generative Art, Glitch Art and Op Art – as well as in textural photography.

He runs and curates the DIY-imprint Lead Lozenges and has published works by artists from Canada, the United States, South Korea and India.
